Port Angeles City Manager Kent Myers and Sequim City Manager Steve Burkett spoke Wednesday about how the neighboring cities hope to work through the Great Recession.

The two presented hopes and plans at a Clallam County League of Women Voters luncheon in Sequim on Wednesday.

Burkett touted the city's plans to run water and sewer infrastructure to the Sequim Marine Research Operations for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, commonly called Battelle.

Burkett called the lab based on the shores of West Sequim Bay “one of the few businesses in Sequim capable of creating family wage jobs.”

The Sequim City Council is considering a solar access ordinance and adopting a downtown plan in an effort to boost Sequim's economy beyond big-box stores, which Burkett said have become sizable city revenue sources.

Myers said Port Angeles is considering renewable energy such as solar, wind and wave sources while the composite industry, which develops components for aviation and marine uses, is a large part of his city's future economic growth plan.

The city of Port Angeles and the Port of Port Angeles have worked with Angeles Composite Technologies at the industrial park adjacent to William R. Fairchild International Airport to develop a composites campus, Myers said.

“We'll never have the big-box stores that you have in Sequim,” Myers said, but added that the city is working hard to retain and develop solid retail business. “I think there's a good possibility that the president will come,” Myers told a Clallam County League of Women Voters luncheon group of more than 50 people at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Wednesday.

No confirmation of a presidential visit was forthcoming from the White House or Olympic National Park.

Myers cited Secret Service inquiries to the city about security should the president attend but did not elaborate beyond that.

Myers' communications administrator, Teresa Pierce, later referred additional Peninsula Daily News inquiries to Olympic National Park administrators.

Second, the bladder is pressurized by a pressure bulb, located on the left shoulder strap of the pack. Pressing the bulb a dozen or so times ”pumps up” the bladder with air, allowing water to be sprayed out of the bite valve, eliminating the need to bite down and suck.

Third, the bite valve not only can switch on and off, but it sprays water in two steady streams without leaking, even if it’s fully pressurized and in the unlocked position.

Finally, working with this hydration system is made easier with quick release valves. The tubes are easy to release from the bladder for easy refilling and cleaning.

But the question remains, does spraying trump sucking when it comes to staying hydrated during outdoor shenanigans? For myself, I didn’t really see much advantage. First time out, I attempted to mimick the pictures found on Geigerrig’s website of a grizzled mountain biker nonchalantly spraying water into his mouth. But, alas, my aim was off and I ended up with a stream of H2o in my eye.

Going back to basics, I put the charged valve in my mouth and bit down. Water shot out in a steady stream and no sucking was needed to take a drink. But still, I had to wonder if sucking on a bite valve was such a huge problem that we needed a new hydration system that sprays? Well, aside from basic drinking applications, the Geigerrig does have advantages.

Ever have a buddy with you on the trail who forgot water and ended up wrapping his dirty lips around your bite valve? Gross. But with the Geigerrig, you can share your water with anyone by simply spraying it into their mouths, no bodily contact needed. Plus, I found it perfect for sharing water with my best buddy, as spraying water at the dog allowed her to drink without the need to stop, take off my pack, and pull out her water bowl.
