• James Hauf, a social studies teacher at Berkeley Middle School, is one of 110 United States teachers who will participate in a two-way exchange program that provides enrichment opportunities to secondary teachers worldwide.

Hauf will begin a two-week stint teaching in Ghana on June 4. He also will conduct curriculum workshops and visit the surrounding community as a guest speaker.

• Cathy Holway, a fourth-grade teacher at Combs Elementary School, is one of 100 teachers nationwide who will participate in the 2011 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in July at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Math and science experts from the National Science Teachers Association and Math Solutions will serve as academy instructors. The goal is to enhance teachers' math and science knowledge and build their expertise in facilitating student learning through problem solving and inquiry.

• Allison Wallace, a senior at McCluer High School, has earned a Gates Millennium scholarship.

The scholarships pay all of a student's expenses through their undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees. Students also have access to opportunities for personal and career development.

Wallace, a 2010 YWCA Future Leader, plans to attend the University of Southern California.

• Victor Sy, an eighth-grader at Ferguson Middle School, earned a perfect score in the Continental Mathematics League, a national math competition. Victor was a National student winner in the league's Euclidean Division. He and other competitors had to solve six-challenging math problems in 30 minutes in five separate matches.

• Three Ferguson-Florissant students have earned $1,500 Bright Flight scholarships. The qualified for the awards for having ACT scores in the top 5 percent of Missouri ACT test takers.

The three are Scott Jost and Molly O'Keefe, seniors at McCluer High School, and Charles Pixley, a senior at McCluer North High School.

• Four Ferguson-Florissant sophomores will attend the Missouri Scholars Academy this summer.

Jennifer Boston and Kenya Turner of McCluer High School and Darby Dachroeden and Jacqueline Schultz of McCluer North High School will attend the three-week program at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

The academy is for the state's top sophomores and is directed by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Participants will take part in programs and activities designed to help them realize their full potential.

Griffith Students Attending Ferguson Middle For Rest of School Year

Because of the damage from the tornado that hit Ferguson last Friday, Griffith Elementary School,located at 200 Day Drive in Ferguson, has been declared  unsafe to use for the rest of this school year.

As a result, school will be held at a different location.  Starting Moinday, April 25, teachers and staff were asked to report to Ferguson Middle School at their regular time. Ferguson Middle School is located at 701 January Ave., in Ferguson.

Parents ahave been asked to have their kindergarten through sixth-grade children travel to Griffith the way they normally would.

Bus riders will be picked up from their regular stops and driven to Ferguson Middle School.

Students who walk or who are dropped off at school should come to Griffith, and they will be taken to Ferguson Middle on shuttle buses.

Classes will not be cancelled, and children will keep the same teachers. Parents are welcome to contact Robin Witherspoon, principal of Griffith Elementary School,  at Ferguson Middle, to learn more about this transition.  A letter was b eing sent home with students  sharing more information.

“I want to personally thank Griffith’s parents, students and staff for their flexibility and patience during this time of transition and for supporting Griffith Elementary School,” Witherspoon said.
