A look at possible candidates to be next IMF chief
France's Finance and Economy Minister Christine Lagarde visits a Parisian supermarket and goods retailer in Paris Thursday May 19, 2011. Lagarde has emerged as a potential candidate to replace IMF chief, Frenchman Dominique Strauss-Kahn who resigned Wednesday, saying he wants to devote "all his energy" to fighting sexual assault charges in New York. The global financial community was abuzz with speculation Tuesday May 17, 2011, about who would eventually replace Dominique Strauss-Kahn as head of the International Monetary Fund. With Strauss-Kahn jailed in New York on sex crime charges, the prevailing view in the markets and in policymaking circles is that it's only a matter of time before he quits or is forced out by the IMF board. Holding up the supermarket industry as a model for the equitable distribution of life's necessities is like holding up the NFL as a model of gender parity. Evidently, you can become a professor of economics—and can write on economics for the opinion

There are many people who think water comes out of taps and that milk comes from the supermarket. "This disconnection is real so we have then got to talk the language of economics to show there is a connection. Just because nature comes free and is not
Resource Economics at Towson: Energy from supermarket waste
CNN reports on how supermarket waste can be either turned into prepared foods or used in anaerobic digesters to produce energy. While large donations to food banks do occur, one recipient supposes that they receive about 1% of all supermarket waste. It's hard to know exactly what's going on since the major chains have a code of silence, refusing to speak to the media (or even to be interviewed by Karen and Nia for a class project). Corporate waste is potentially a huge resource, though as with most resources it requires some investment to use. Glad you're here! I'm an applied economist from the West Coast teaching at Towson University in Maryland. I'm interested in both local & global environmental issues as well as my primary research interests, which are health and development economics. I created this blog for a Natural Resource Economics class I teach every year, and student contributions help keep it going for part of the year. It's become more than just a class blog, though: I use it to post environment & resource-based news that catches my eye. Comments are always welcome. Hope it's useful!
