"They came out because they read the 'The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County' by Mark Twain," said Sara's uncle, 51-year-old Chris Barton of Arnold.
Sara said she felt "good" after jumping her frog a total of 6 feet, 8 inches in the allowed three hops, enough to give her bragging rights for having easily outdistanced the frogs jockeyed by her mom and uncle.
That was despite mom Sharon Casaletto's best effort. After merciful judges gave her permission to make a second attempt, she clenched her fist and looked her frog in the eye.
"I tried to talk to my frog beforehand," Casaletto said. "I'm afraid I put it to sleep." Her frog's resulting jump: a modest 4 feet, 5 inches.
For a little perspective, frogs in the International Frog Jump Finals held on Sunday - the final day of the fair - routinely jump 15 or 20 feet. The world record, which has stood since 1986, is 21 feet, 53/4 inches.
Of course, the professional frog jockeys know exactly how to motivate their jumpers. Newcomers to the sport often discover they don't enjoy getting that close.
"Once I touched his gooeyness, I really couldn't handle it," said Carol Wyllie, 41, of Valley Springs, who went on the frog jump stage to assist her daughter, Alyssa Wyllie, 8, who was entered in the amateur fun jump division.

As one famous author, Mark Twain, once said, “A person with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds.”(brainyquote.com) The meaning of this quote is that when somebody unknown comes up with an idea, it seems eccentric and odd to the public, however once the idea gets the public’s attention and recognition, the idea now seems to be a success. This is a great example by Mark Twain because it somehow portrays his own career and how he became an American literature icon for many through the recognition of the public. The time period that Mark Twain was born in and took part of was the Cold War period, which lasted from 1850-1900. (Winston 407) The Cold War was the period of wars and fights between the North and the South and slavery was the main subject that existed at that time. This was a period where everyone was depressed and miserable due to their losses and injuries of their loved ones. When Twain slowly became known for his works and his style, his writings seemed to have a positive impact on the public. Even though the people were going through such a hard and sad time, Twain was able to cheer up the public with his humorous stories. Mark Twain influenced the time period that he was in because the nation was going through hard times and difficulties and Twain managed to pull the public out of the sadness through his magnificent humorous stories.
Mark Twain, whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was born on November 30, 1835. (Wikipedia.org) Twain was born into a merchant family. During the 1800′s, it was normal and fashionable for families to have several children. This was a likely thing because at that time there were many disease present and numerous children died at birth or at an early age. Like any other family, Twain’s parents had seven children and Twain was the sixth one. (Wikipedia.org) Twain can be considered as a lucky and blessed child that he actually survived though the many diseases that surrounded him. I believe that this was defiantly a sign of fortune and success that foreshadowed his future as a writer. However even though he survived and repelled the diseases, he was still a weak child during his young ages. (bookrags.com) In 1840, young Twain starts attending school after they move to their new house in Hannibal, which was located in Missouri. At that time, Missouri was a slave state and he witnessed slavery all around him, which he later used and included in his writings. (Wikipedia.org.
