Spaniard smashes North Face 100 record

Spanish trail runner Kilian Jornet powered through the 100 kilometres of trails in the Jamison and Megalong Valleys in nine hours, 19 minutes and 6 seconds after overtaking Frenchman Francois D’Haene with 16 kilometres to go.

D’Haene finished the event in nine hours and 24 minutes.

Desert distance running specialist Ryan Sandes from South Africa came third, finishing 35 minutes later and was plagued towards the end with cramp when tackling some of the more significant climbs.

The top three finishers were members of the respected Salomon International Trail Running Team.

Jornet said it was important for him to go with another runner in order to keep pace in the event — a view shared by many in the record field of 850 registered entrants, of whom more than 500 finished the race.

The first women across the finish line were Julie Quinn in 12 hours, 13 minutes and 45 seconds, and Nerea Martinez, just two seconds behind her.

Best of the Blue Mountains runners was Ewan Horsburgh who finished in 16th place with an excellent time of 11:34:39, faster than his time last year of 12:01:38.

John Glen came 57th with a solid time of 13:16:06 and Robert Phillpott came 95th with 13:56:25, ensuring three Blue Mountains entrants finished in the top 100.

Runners kept arriving at the Fairmont Resort after a stunning sunset as already chilly temperatures dropped further towards freezing point.

"The York Fairmont Resort was ok and we had a pretty good stay. Sure the location could be better but the hotel room was clean and the staff in the hotel friendly. They helped us organize some of our day trips which was really comfortable. Next time we visit Blue Mountains we probably choose a hotel closer to all the attractions but I would recommend the York Fairmont Resort for all their facilities.
