Garden Highlight: 10 acres of field-grown roses, 80 percent David Austins and 20 percent hybrid teas. They also grow about 600 mop-head hydrangeas; the big leaf Macrophylla “White” and Nikko “Blue,” growing under shaded hoop houses.
Their Market: Most of the roses are harvested and sold at the San Francisco Flower Market. The winery also provides the flowers used in arrangements for weddings held on the estate.
Visitors: Although the winery plans to open a tasting room and flower market, it is not open to drop-in visitors. The Bordigionis are happy to show people around by appointment only. Call at least several days in advance: 537-8007.

At Annadel Estate Winery the signature crop of course is the 10 acres of Bordeaux varietals. But if you follow your nose beyond the vineyards, it will lead you to a rare crop in Wine Country — 10 acres of field-grown roses that make their way in bunches to the San Francisco Flower Market and into the bouquets of brides who begin their married lives in the stone ruins of the 1880s Annadel Winery.

These are not your grocery store roses, bred and grown in greenhouses to withstand long journeys to market from south of the border. They are grown in Sonoma Valley soil, exposed to everything nature delivers.

The also are primarily David Austin roses, cult favorites among brides, high-end arrangers and gardeners. Distinctively English roses, they combine the form and fragrance of old roses with the repeat flowering of modern roses. The farm also grows some select miniroses, hybrid teas such as ‘Mojave' and ‘Just Joey' and popular florabundas like ‘Iceberg' and ‘Gingersnap,' as well as a few filler plants for bridal arrangements.

When Dean Bordigioni bought the neglected farm and former nursery just north of Oakmont in 2003, he wasn't looking to take on a cottage industry in cut roses. The longtime San Francisco and Marin businessman who had nursed a dream for 20 years of owning his own winery, just wanted to make great wine.

But the 33 acres on the valley floor just north of Oakmont, once an old Annadel rail stop, proved to be a compelling package deal. For years, until the late ‘90s, the property was the site of Skylark Nursery, one of the larger wholesale nurseries in Northern California. More recently it was a nursery specializing in European grapevine clones. The roses remained.

California is cited as growing about 60 percent of the America’s reserve of roses within a green house setting. The beautiful rose is the national flower of the United States. The rose family also includes pears, apples, cherries, plums, peaches, apricots, and almonds. Roses are valued for their romantic symbolism but their blooms are also edible. It has the flavors of green apples and strawberries.
