Powerless citizens endure another sizzling day

The Meteorological Department recorded 35.5 degrees Centigrade maximum temperature with 67 per cent humidity in Karachi as there has been no let up in the worsening power supply situation with continuing instances of prolonged and frequent instances of loadshedding and breakdowns in different parts of the city. Complaints of power breakdowns were received from Saddar, PECHS, Scheme-33, Liaquatabad, Malir, Kharadar, Meethadar, Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Gadap. The KESC management, in a statement, has now started giving the impression to the public indirectly that the CBA-led workers of the power utility were tacitly allowed to carry out their violent protest campaign with no check by the government authorities concerned at the federal and provincial levels in order to cause serious setback and loss to ‘foreign investors’ of the KESC and later to shy them away from the country. Leaders of the CBA of the KESC workers and other labour bodies in the KESC denied any wrongdoing, violent or sabotage activity during their protest campaign against the impending large-scale downsizing in the power utility. They have been sitting on hunger strike unto death since April 29 outside the Karachi Press Club to further their protest campaign. The residents of Sasi Homes in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block-4 complained on Tuesday such phenomenon of seriously low voltage for the last two days owing to which energy-saver bulbs in their households could not function normally. The residents and traders of Burns Road complained of high voltage supply, which is detrimental to functioning of precious electrical appliances at their shops and homes. A statement issued by the KESC on Tuesday said: “More than rectifying local faults, the KESC had the most important task ahead to resolve the manually caused defects all across the city by the CBA Union’s miscreants during the past around 10 days when the Union started its illegal protest and destructive campaign aimed at failing the power distribution system in the City”. “The CBA hooligans damaged six crane-fitted vehicles parked at the KESC offices in Badar Commercial Market in DHA-V Extension to disable them from being used in rectification of local faults. These included vehicle numbers KM-7590, KM-6305, KM-7608, JX-6301, KM-8453 and JX-6374. The attackers also put on fire a vehicle No. JX-8711, but the fire was soon extinguished by security personnel and the local people”.
