Goal: In Houston, Retooling, Not Rebuilding

It has become a rite of spring (at least since 2007) in Major League Soccer: the union that represents the league’s more than 500 players publishes their salaries on its Web site . (It is a useful look, but it would be even more valuable if the union, instead of listing the players alphabetically or by club in the static PDF format, presented the material in an Excel spreadsheet for easy manipulation. But why quibble?)

According to A Beautiful Numbers Game blog, the total M.L.S. payroll for 2011 is $80.2 million, which roughly equals the transfer fee Chelsea paid Liverpool for the rights to sign the Spanish striker Fernando Torres.

When the league’s numbers are massaged and chewed over in those terms, especially since the numbers show a great disparity from top to bottom , it is easy to make sport of M.L.S.

“I think the naysayers are the naysayers,” said Chris Canetti, the president of the Houston Dynamo. “The soccer snobs looking to find reasons to look down at M.L.S. and use this as ammunition to make their case. Other than that, it’s really not a big deal. The fans couldn’t care less. They are here to support the team. We have plenty of Euro snobs here in Houston in the oil and gas business who will use these numbers as a reason not to support M.L.S. But the numbers don’t hurt us beyond the naysayers.”

Canetti, who was named one of the Sports Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 for 2010 , is the former general manager of the MetroStars now charged with gently rebuilding the Dynamo and shepherding the club’s construction of its new stadium in downtown Houston.

The Dynamo, which faces the visiting Red Bulls on Saturday night at Robertson Stadium , landed in Houston in 2005 when the San Jose Earthquakes picked up stakes and left California (though the Dynamo was considered an expansion team because the Earthquakes’  name, colors and history remained behind). Houston won M.L.S. titles in 2006 and 2007 (beating New England in the final both times) with a roster that included Dwayne De Rosario (now with the Red Bulls), and Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Stuart Holden (Bolton Wanderers), two American internationals who have since left to play in Europe. As Canetti is aware, it is difficult to maintain a quality core in M.L.S. over an extended period.

“We are a team in transition,” Canetti conceded. “I don’t like to use the word rebuild. I prefer retool. We have 13 new guys on the roster this year and it will take time. It doesn’t help that Ching is hurt. The way the rules are set up, they want to bring the teams at the top back down to the middle.

The new system, exclusive to real estate agents who are members of the participating multiple listing service, will help reduce processing times for many short sale transactions, which can take more than nine months.
